beware the timeshare…

Don’t get me wrong…I’m extremely happy about where we’re staying here in Isla Mujeres…the Avalon Reef Club has been fantastic (loved the villas - staying in the one right on the tip of the island in the photo on the right).

What I want to warn you about, though (and I will write more on this later when I get back) is their timeshare presentation (FYI - they are affilated with interval international - more on them later…)

If you’ve travelled to any warm destination, you probably have been jumped on by one or ten timeshare presentation offers.

Dangling the golden carrot at the end of the proverbial stick is and always will be their hook (e.g., discounted Hawaiian Luaus, guided tours of Mayan ruins, golf cart/scooter rentals, free dinners, dinette suites, a year’s supply of Baskin Robins, etc.) and while it really is a good deal…BEWARE of the hard sell, and I mean hard.

Three things I will say about the Avalon/Interval Interational ii.jpgtimeshare circus-like presentation:
1) they did NOT respect our time (claimed a 90 minute presentation including breakfast)…almost THREE hours later I said we were ready to leave (the kept talking/selling)
2) they don’t understand that most people would like some time before committing to a purchase that will affect the next 25 years of their lives (I mean, really, would you buy a brand new BMW if you had no idea what it was and were forced to make that decision in 90 minutes?)
3) they play good cop/bad cop (the manager, tour guide, property developer all spoke to us) so poorly that even I, a non-sales person, could see right through it

I came across this couple’s latest experience and this person who had another nightmare come true! I’m glad we walked away!

I’ll be back on more travel customer service experiences shortly…gotta go catch some waves.
