I really don’t watch a lot of TV (or so I tell myself). What I’ve realized, though, is that I watch a lot of HBO.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in need of a therapist and a chaise lounge to discuss this, but it is addictive (especially the intro with the static and the logo…love that). Take that away and what sticks to the fridge here? Simple…solid writing.
So, in true service-oriented form, let’s go over the laundry list of series that should make it on to your ‘to-do’ list (most of which I’ve already yammered on about):
- Flight of the Conchords
- The Wire
- Entourage
- Rome
- Extras (Ricky Gervais’ little baby)
- and…most recently, and NOT on HBO…Californication
What first struck me straight out the gate is: 1) David Duchovny is in another TV show; 2) the story revolves around a writer who’s pissed off at the Hollywood scene; 3) there’s gratuitous nudity, sex and drug use (read: very edgy); 4) the Red Hot Chilli Peppers have taken legal action against the use of their 1999 album of the same name; and 5) David Duchovny is in another TV show.
He’s certainly come a long way from the Mulder and Scully days of the mid-90’s (yikes, has it been that long?) and in Californication you’ll either immediately love it or hate it. Full stop. As you can probably appreciate, anything ‘racy’ on TV will generate some buzz, particularly ’negative’ buzz from conservative groups. Has Californication developed some critics? Check. Here’s something for you to chew on from Californication’s wikipedia site:
The show premiered on Thursday, November 8, 2007 in New Zealand amidst controversy due to issues raised by the conservative lobby group Family First, who objected to the content of the show. The group called for families to boycott any company advertising during the episode which it described as ‘drug, sex and vomit-laden’.
Vomit aside, I actually am giving it a chance and you know what? It’s got legs! Duchovny is proving he can out-act the strange extra-terrestrial investigator typecast you and I probably know him best for. In fact, Californication has already hit the radar of the 2007 Golden Globe Awards with Duchovny winning best actor (funny that Extras won best series) and seems to be picking up some momentum. And for that, I’ll give anyone time.
So, keep an open mind and if you’re intrigued, fire away. You’ve got nothing to lose except time and we all have a lot of that, no?
