cut and print! (service in the film industry)

24Jul08

biz-books-vancouver.jpegRemember how excited we all used to get for back-to-school shopping? I do.

I may be making an inappropriate generalization with that question, but I’d venture a guess that it struck a chord with a ‘few’ of you (it’s OK if you don’t want to admit it - no one will know).

Well, take that feeling, grow up a little (in age), be interested in the film industry (particularly writing), and you may appreciate what I’m about to tell you.

You see, I’ve recently taken an interest in screenwriting for the film industry. How’s it going, you ask? So far…amazing. I will note one thing for those who may find yourself in a similar situation (e.g., coming from a finance/business background), ‘try before you buy’.

What that means is that if you’re like me, someone who does their research before jumping in with both feet, you’ve got some homework to do. And, when you’ve got homework to do, you need resources…I found one…a HUGE one…at biz books in downtown Vancouver!

Before I get to what you need to know about this place, I have to give a shout out to the guy at Chapters (on Robson Street) who put me on to biz books in the first place. I mean, isn’t it cool (and truly good service) when an employee for an uber retailer, like Chapters, throws a piece of advice out there (read: named biz books as the place I should really be at) that he/she knows will help the customer, even if it doesn’t help their bottom line? Yeah, it’s cool! And…it isn’t forgotten!

Cut to biz books:

FADE IN:
INT. DOWNTOWN BOOK STORE - DAYTIME

DARREN enters store in downtown Vancouver not knowing what to expect. Once he crosses the door, shock and awe soon flush over him. CAROLE is quietly sitting behind the counter and greets him with a smile.

CAROLE
Hello…how are you today?

DARREN
Great, thanks! Nice store! I’m looking for a book, a very specific type of book…

CAROLE (guiding DARREN to the stacks)
Absolutely…happy to help. Now, here’s a couple of suggestions for you…

I spent about 20 minutes speaking to CAROLE, who was intensely helpful. And you know what, and I’m a consumer so take it from someone who knows sales staff, she was interested in what she did. In fact, she made it fun!

I’m now on their call list for a few titles that I’m after and I’ll tell you what…biz books is certainly getting another curtain call from me. Impressed was I? Slightly!

DARREN
