The title of this post has four words in it, that much is true.
It also has absolutely nothing to do with supersonic jets which no longer exist (probably because it’s spelled differently) and everything to do with a truly unique entertainment experience: Flight of the Conchords,
a new HBO series (yes entourage comes from them too) that just finished it’s first season on the air.
Why am I writing about a TV series? Isn’t timinganddelivery.com all about sharing good/bad service experiences?
The answer to the first question is ‘because it’s unique and the writers have definitely thought outside of the box (which I think that is a huge part of how good service is delivered, actually) - see what I had to say about my run in with the Nintendo Wii marketing team to see what I’m on about.
The answer to the second question is ‘yes…see the answer to the first question’.
Here’s really what you need to know (also laid out for you real pretty like on the Flight of the Conchords website):
-
Flight of the Conchords follows the ‘rather simplistic and strangely complex’ lives a two man, digi-folk band (they even use a keytar in one of their episodes…I haven’t seen those since 1983!) from New Zealand as they try to make a name for themselves in the music ‘biz’ in their adopted home of New York City.
-
The band is made up of Bret McKenzie on guitar and vocals, and Jemaine Clement on guitar and vocals (What the Folk! is where you want to go to learn a lot more about them off camera).
-
Their results to date: they’ve found a manager (Murray) whose “other” job is at the New Zealand Consulate; ONE fan (Mel) - a married obsessive who also has a Flight of the Conchords blog (cool idea, I think) that is definitely worth a look-see; and one friend (Dave) who owns the local pawn shop and still lives with his parents (but denies it, suggesting they’re just older flat mates).
Throw in some really funny music videos interlaced into the script like: I’m not Cryin’ or my personal favorite She’s So Hot - Boom (thanks to both hrudu and pbandjtime and their video capturing voodoo) and that’s you’ve got a recipe for what I largely believe will be a huge success for HBO and at the same time, a great new entertainment option for you (because that’s what’s important here, isn’t it?!).
Speaking of recipes, I have to say that I wasn’t surprised when the crew over at Slashfood let me in on yumsugar’s lasagne recipe for one that Bret referenced in the I’m Not Cryin’ video…tight.
I’ve given you the dots, it’s up to you connect them.
T&D Rating: 4 night gigs (out of 5)

Flight of the Conchords is a near-religious experience. It’s the hidden piece of chicken in the last bite of curry. It’s an open lane down Cambie. It’s Michael Jackson when he was a brother, not a frail white grandmother. If you thought having two ’straight’ men and no comic foil wouldn’t work, you’d be wrong. The music videos make this show a fantastic feast for the senses. Definitely worth checking out.
