This post has been written in parts (this being the first part, obviously) as we don’t leave until the 10th of August. The follow-up will be posted shortly.
I like wine. Actually, I love wine. If you (or ones you love) fall into this camp…you will appreciate what I’m about to say.
First…the backround: residents of British Columbia (read: me) are lucky in the sense that we are only a few hours away from ‘wine country’. If you haven’t been, you must. If you’ve been, you must go back. I fall into the latter category and thus my story can begin.
Oliver (the place, not the musical) is located in BC’s South Okangan Valley has been dubbed the wine capital of Canada. Picture hill tops overlooking rows of grape vines, orchard trees, extremely hot summers and miles of desert sand.
This is the ideal environment for wine…and this is the location for the subject of this post - Grapevine Bed & Breakfast in Oliver, British Columbia.
Back in early June I stumbled upon Grapevine’s web site (www.bbcanada.com/7308.html) and engaged the owners (Gene & Kathy Mercier) in an email conversation about our plans to be there in August for my birthday. I’ve travelled a lot, and have dealt with my fair share of hotels, lodges, resorts, etc. and I’m being honest when I say this, but the way that I was treated by Kathy simply blew me away.
Not only did she help us plan our days out (including making reservations at some of the wineries I have always wanted to see - Burrowing Owl, Blue Mountain, to name a few), but she also personally contacted some of the surrounding restaurants to book us reservations for lunches, dinners and even the winemakers to arrange private vineyard tours. Umm…wow.
As I said before, we haven’t yet been, but are VERY excited to get there and to enjoy what Kathy has laid out for us. The weather, the surroundings, the wine, and the company will make this a GREAT birthday to be sure. More to come…cheers!
T&D Rating: 5 grapes (out of 5)
