I don’t know about you, but I had to take music lessons (read: piano lessons) as a kid. HAD to.
Thinking back to those days, I remember dreading the after-school bell on Mondays. To some, it represented freedom. To me, it represented 60 minutes of slavery.

To name but a few of my favorite torture devices that my ‘teacher’ had in her toolkit of terror:
- scales
- dictation
- chords
- flats
- sharps
- crescendos
- decrescedos
- harmonics
- pentatonics
- lack of gin and tonics (was too young), and
- the epitome (I love how that word is spelled, by the way) of all that is evil in this world - assigning homework in one simple, but tortuous act - practice.
That was then…and (you guessed it) this is now. What’s the take away from all of this? What’s my point? Well, some of you may agree with me when I say that music ’lessons’ help broaden one’s musical tastes.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that music lessons will result in you liking everything that you hear (I certainly don’t). What I am saying, though, is that I for one have had my ears opened to a wider range of styles. So props to my parents…the pain paid off!
So let’s get down to brass tacks…what’s the subject of your post, Darren? Simple, it’s a radio show called music & company on
that I listen to from time-to-time when driving into work.
A couple of things: 1) Yes, it’s classical music; 2) No, I’m not getting old; and 3) It’s original AND engaging. I like that.
To be honest, I never thought I’d be writing about a classical music radio station (better yet listening to one in my car!), but music & company has done something very well. Want to know what that is? Packaging!

More specifically, they’ve chosen the perfect person to host such a show…his name is Tom Allen. BELIEVE me…this guy knows his stuff. Why should you believe me? Simple. Anyone who can:
- make me laugh in the morning (starts at 6am)
- make me laugh in the morning BEFORE I’ve had any coffee
- make me laugh in the morning before I’ve had any coffee WHILE listening to classical music
is really good at what they do! Tom Allen is really good at what he does…and music & company is the perfect arena for him to wage his classical music warfare.
With features like the Cage Match, Music Weenie Bingo, and the Web Goddess, you know you’re in for something a ‘little different’. Throw in Tom Allen’s stories (he was talking about a dead parrot last week that apparently had something to do with music…not sure what) and witty banter, and you’ve got something worth a listen.
In my mind, different is good…it keeps your offering unique, fresh, and engaging. When I’m in the mood to relax, I’m hooked on this program. And getting customers/listeners/people/parrots hooked is what good service should be doing in the first instance.
Bravo.
