I’ve had a debate going on recently. I suppose that means I talk to myself, and so be it…I do. I also have had to play tour guide to some friends recently.
Here’s what I’ve been struggling with:
Where’s the best ‘loungey/resto-bar/chic joint’ in Vancouver?
You know what I mean…the kind of place that makes you feel like ordering the pommes frites and listening to Morcheeba on endless loop rather than grabbing the 12-oz prime rib (no disrespect to the PR, mind you) and hoping you have enough change for the towel attendant in the restroom.
Here are a couple that have jumped to my mind (probably b/c I’ve written about most of them): Cascade Room, Boneta, Stella’s, The Charlatan, and Chill Winston.
But help me out…what else is there? Where is the best vibe/service 1-2 combo found?
Throw something against the fridge…let’s see if it sticks!

Maybe because of it’s close proximity to me, but I have always liked Hell’s Kitchen. It has a decent menu, and the attitude is pretty chill in there.
Of those you’ve listed, Stella’s is my favourite for food and vibe. Another place to consider is the Five Point on Main in Heritage Hall.
The next time you are out on Commercial, stop by the Libra Room…Commercial and Gravely, one block north of 1st ave. They have a horrible tacky yellow awning, and an owner who has a bit of an attitude problem…but the atmosphere is good and they have live music nightly…my favorite is Friday night…funky jazz music….check it out.
Hi… Sorry for the delayed reply!
It’s been a hellish couple of weeks with the move.
I’d definitely have to say, ZIN! The restaurant is good, and the lounge is awesome for the classy environment, and yet relaxed feel. That’s one place that will be hard to replace as a local haunt when I settle in to my new abode in Yaletown next week.
Hi Darren,
Hmmm… I *hate* Chill Winston, and *love* Cascade Room (now The Cascade, without the ‘room’). I’d point you out to the restaurant reviews but I’m sick and running out the door. Oh and I’ve moved my blog
Best wishes.
