Walk your bubble toes right into your nearest music store (or get in front of your itunes) and do yourself a favour…get Jack Johnson’s latest little project named after a bumper sticker.
I play guitar and have an appreciation for a number of different styles/artists. And on my latest trip back from New York, I had Jack’s latest, Sleep Through the Static, on a pretty intense repeat program. I kind of do that, though…that’s just my thing.
What I found cool is that Jack has found the time to raise a family (two boys), continue a professional surfing career, and give back to the environment. Apparently his house in Hawaii is eco-friendly to the nth degree. The studio in which the album was recorded in, for instance, ran on 100% solar power! Doesn’t really sound like a multi-platinum rock n roll artist, does it? Yeah, that’s what he said.
If you want a cheat sheet, try these in order for a little taste test:
- Sleep Through the Static
- Hope
- If I Had Eyes
- All at Once
- Enemy
Sleep Through the Static is a powerful follow-on album to In Between Dreams (where your bubble toes and banana pancakes came from). It’s got a distinctly more electric/soulful feel to it and you can get a sense that he really is writing some pretty serious stuff. He’s also grown up (if one can say that). What do I mean by that? From what I understand, he didn’t think it was fair to have his band members come over to record this album in Hawaii away from their families…so, he came to them in LA. In addition, If I Had Eyes was dedicated to his little boy for a game they play at home. Sounds like our little Jack’s all grows up, no?
As I believe that finding good music is akin to finding good service (which you are completely free to agree or disagree with without hurting my feelings), I stick to what I said earlier…pick up these 14 tracks…you won’t be sorry. I agree with wiser-rocker, Sleep Through the Static is one of those albums you can hit play on and not even know that an hour or so has passed.
So, like Jack does, save yourself the next flush, use your yard and go grab some waves!
