You want to know what I think? I think you should proceed to the yellow shaded area on the map.

Why? Because I’ve recently discovered something I’ve known all along. Confused? Good…it’s better that way.
Here’s where you should go (specifically): The Sunset Grill
The Sunset Grill is a neigbourhood pub/restaurant located in Vancouver’s Kitsilano area that has been there since the dawn of time (ok…since Def Leppard was pouring sugar on things) and has always offered up something I value a great deal when it comes to service…consistency.
Over the years, I’ve been to The Sunset Grill for two things in particular: 1) weekend brunches; and 2) to watch playoff sports (mostly hockey, world cup soccer, and tonight, the NBA playoffs - sorry Craig, my thoughts are with you and the Suns…as they set).
Since 2000 (when I started going), I’ve always appreciated what The Sunset Grill has delivered time-and-time again. But, what I’ve never realized, until my friend Craig introduced me to it, is that The Sunset Grill has got a vibe that makes it quite unique…enough to make you want to come back. Sound like good service? I think so.
Why do I say this with such conviction? Simple: Rick the bartender.
After meeting him for the first time and watching him work and relate to our group, Rick (the bartender) strikes me as the type of person that could look at a New York City Subway map…upside down…in another language…and ‘get it’. What do I mean by that? Put simply, he’s the type of person you want to run into when you’re in an unknown place. Why? He makes you feel comfortable and like you’re ‘one of the gang’. Sound like good service? I think so.
The fact that Rick also happens to hail from Winnipeg (is nicknamed ‘Mr. Winnipeg’, apparently) and fired off esoteric Winnipeg references in rapid succession, like the names of a half-dozen regional hockey teams I probably haven’t heard mentioned since 1990, the places to go for each and every night of the week (circa 1994), and that Tuxedo people are ’soft’ and needed to put in a Yuk-Yuk’s to ‘liven up the place’.
In addition to what I’ve already told you, I think Craig over at mydinnertable nailed what you can expect from The Sunset Grill in Vancouver:
There aren’t any real frills about The Sunset Grill. You get eggs. You get bacon. You get the diner classics. The original at least is the kind of place where the waitress has been there forever, knows her regulars and may even call you hon’.
The Sunset Grill has never (and will never) pretend to be something it isn’t. It is what it is…and that’s why it’s been there forever (and a day) with a loyal following. And let’s be honest with one another, here…aren’t comfort, consistency, and pleasant attitudes the building blocks for good service?
Jenga!
darren

damn darrin you beat me to the punch. i’ve been meaning to write this place up for ages, if not for the good vibe you describe, then at least for the don henley reference.
sorry i misspelled your name darren. i know like three darrins with an i so it’s basically a force of habit at this point.
