In thinking about what I’m about to say, I first thought I should put Darby’s Pub in Vancouver (specifically, Kitsilano) into context.
Picture a neighbourhood pub that feels like Cheers when you walk in. Throw in local Kitsilano flavour, open mic nights, a typical (but well done) bar menu, and an attached liquor store…and there you have it.
Darby’s Pub has been around for over 25 years and has built up a very loyal and strong following, especially during playoff season (Canucks in particular). Well, after those 25 some odd years, Darby’s is getting a makeover!
Check out the proposed Darby’s renovation plans for yourself.
The new look is cool, don’t get me wrong. It’s certainly trendy, minimalistic, modern and…very Vancouver. What’s interesting (thanks to foodvancouver for pointing this out) is that two weeks ago Alex Rotherman (ex owner of Infinity Restaurant) joined the team at Darby’s Pub, this time in the kitchen. This, is a good thing.
I must admit, I’m a fan of the current look and feel as there aren’t many traditional pubs in Kitsilano (let alone Vancouver) anymore. From the few UFC matches, hockey games and open-mic nights I’ve taken in over the years, I’ve always had a great time (with equally as good service).
That aside, I hope Darby’s Pub doesn’t suffer the loss of many of its regulars who decide not to conform to the new look (I’m sure some will). Then again, change could bring new opportunities. Who knows?
What do you think? Are you a fan of the current or the new look?

I think it’s a little too chi-chi for their clientele. It looks as though they’re going the route of every other restaurant in Vancouver… pretty soon they’ll all look and taste like the Cactus Club.
I don’t go in here anymore ever since a friend of mine was beaten up leaving the place. On his way out he tried to intervene on a guy beating up his girlfriend. He was grabbed by 5 of the guys friends and after receiving a throughly good kicking was threatened with a gun. A group of went back a couple of weeks later to find the same gang there and after one hour my friend was recognised by the gang who again threatened him.
