Remember those birthday parties you used to go to when you were a kid?
For me, it was around this time if you’re one who likes to do the math.
Regardless, those types of parties remind me of money cakes, loot bags, pin the tail on the donkey, bumper cars, mini golf, and last but not least, fish ponds!
You know what I mean, the blackboard or large piece of cardboard that was held up in front of you with colourful and pleasant pictures of sea creatures and such all over it.
Your one job, as said fisherperson, was to toss your line over and hook it on a fish. Kind of like real fishing…except:
- there is no boat
- there is no bait
- there are no fish
- and everyone catches something every time.
Forget the birthday parties from the 80s and the surreal fishing experiences as I’m here to tell you that catching a fish every time still works! Why? Where?
Fish Cafe at 1629 Yew Street in Kitsilano is where – and it doesn’t even have to be your birthday for you to be welcome there!
We’ve been a number of times and each time we go, the service is outstanding. Not to mention the food – definitely try the pari pari sauce and the fresh fish of the day, the mussels, the chowder and of course – the fries (read: n’chips)!
The Fish Cafe on Yew has a ‘neighbourhoody’ (understand the location on 41st is a tad larger) feel to it and you are treated to attentive service (typically the manager is walking the floor and smiling…a lot…helping you sort out the menu) and very well put together dishes that will not break the bank. Can easily get out for under $80 for two, including drinks/wine/loads of extras.
Like I said, forget the money cake, as you’ll feel like you’ve just opened your loot bag when you walk through the Fish Cafe doors.
This is one restaurant you’ll want to put on regular rotation…
