After reading a few articles on Darren’s (the guy behind the timinganddelivery curtain) views and opinions on customer service, you realize that the guy is upfront and “tells it like it is”.

So, I had to tell him about Groundwork Athletics, a personal training gym in downtown Vancouver started by a couple of great guys, Troy Dalton, and Jon Bula.

I know Darren is in pretty good shape, loves tough workouts and dabbles in yoga (Ashtanga/Power and not the Hatha). I was telling him that I frequent a place called Groundwork Athletics which would be able to provide that piece of the puzzle that I think he misses from his workout. Like the Ying part of his exercise regimen in the Ying Yang thing.

groundwork-vancouver.jpgGroundwork Athletics started in a small space in Gastown but has now set up shop in the downtown shopping area on Granville, between the London Drugs and Future Shop (or the Winners for those shoppers out there - my wife is always looking for landmarks rather than street names). Soon, Groundwork Athletics will be expanding into a 5,000 square foot exercise space. Another party!

As soon as you enter Groundwork Athletics, you can’t help but feel the excitement and the enthusiasm which everyone that is working out is exuding. Everyone I’ve spoken to who goes to Groundwork, just love the workouts. The guys and gals provide one-on-one sessions, duos or couples, threes or even small group training sessions.

Their popular group personal training (workout in 3 to 4 exercise complexes; then just as you think you can’t do one more, they change the complex for the next set) and their Saturday morning “Afterburn” circuit class are the greatest. What’s Afterburn? Imagine, rotating through 10 to 12 stations in 20 second intervals 3 to 4 times in an hour, then there’s the races at the end. Want to try a “Spin” class? They have LeMond bikes with the cool headset system. Awesome, just awesome cardio with amazing, motivating guides!

Groundwork Athletics’ environment is inviting and not intimidating as you can exercise at your own (from beginner to hardcore). The owners, Jon and Troy (adventure racer and hockey player) are totally involved in training their clients on a daily basis but have a staff of qualified personal training from all walks of “fitnessdom”(one who is a medium distance running “star”, a primo soccer dude, and a gymnast/yoga enthusiast). Their personal “touch” and involvement in their clients is evident and one of the things that make them STAND OUT from the other fly-by-night gyms that pop up, promise you the great body, take your money and then fold.

My kid recently had some shoulder surgery and I trust Jon and the crew with his rehab. The physiotherapist can take you only so far but the kid is determined to have full use of his shoulder and actively play sports again, and I know Groundwork Athletics will be the ticket.

I realize this sort of sounds like a commercial, but I’m so impressed I was given this opportunity to spread the good word. Darren is probably tired of me repeating the Groundwork Athletics mantra (the yoga thing, again). But if you give them a try, you’ll see why I am with a whole bunch of people who are hooked.

Take it from me (I’m a pharmacist) - Groundwork Athletics is like a drug: safe and effective with minimal side effects but great benefits.

Check out the Groundwork Athletics Web site at and sign up for their newsletter. Even better, give Troy a call or email him. I hear that if you can twist his arm, he might give you a free session!
