Whistler/Blackcomb. When you think of it, you probably think of a couple of things…which probably look and sound a lot like the words ‘2010 Olympics’ and/or ’skiing’. Well, if you’ve been, you’ll understand what I mean when I say that entertainment goes with Whistler/Blackcomb like salt goes with pepper.
I already mentioned that a group of us were up in Whistler for the weekend a few weeks back (in the context of a certain Starbucks in Whistler), but what I didn’t mention is that after we were all snowboarded/ski’d out
on the Saturday night, we made our way back to the Garibaldi Lift Company (read: GLC) for a few beverages and to catch the entertainment.
Before I go on, let me just make a point regarding ‘entertainment’. You may agree that the choices available for your entertainment dollar are many and with such choice, you might not always get what you were hoping for when looking for good ’service’. Well, I’m here to tell you about a band that will definitely leave you wanting more. So here goes…
We arrived at GLC, ordered a few drinks and settled in to check out the scene and the huge sounds coming from the four young folk on stage. To be honest, the band kind of ‘took over’ the scene. I wouldn’t kid you, I’m a huge music lover and have seen my fair share of independents over the years…but this band, known as Hey Ocean! is worth your attention!
Complete with huge vocals, great guitar, and a singer who also plays the ‘yazz’ flute better than Ron Burgundy, Hey Ocean! felt, to me, like a local version of Morcheeba with a lot of energy.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Hey Ocean! are a young Vancouver band with a jazzy/lounge feel
- Hey Ocean! know how to ‘work a room’ on the mic and get the crowd into it (including staff)
- Hey Ocean! released their first full-length album in 2006 (seen on the right) called Stop Looking Like Music
- You can tell they have got skills, musically, but what I think breaks the bank here is their songwriting and live show…honestly!
- Hey Ocean! is made up of David Beckingham (guitar/vocals), Ashleigh Ball (lead vocals), David Vertesi (Bass) and Benny Schuetze (drums)
So far, I’ve listened to a few tracks outside of the GLC experience and I gotta say…it’s tight! It’s great to see local talent like this…enjoy, wherever you are!
