I love weddings.
I also am a fan of Greek food.
Mixing those two concepts together, you may recall a movie that had Windex as one of its key comedic elements.
In fact, I wrote about how Stephos needed some, particularly aimed at its line-up and overall level of service.
Well, we’re going to turn the Windex bottle this time at Kitislano’s newest eatery occupying the 1835 West 4th slot – Piato.
Having heard about it at two of my usual blog stop-overs – kitsilano and urbandiner, and seeing it blossom from the abandoned Old India Grill to an uber chic/NYC-esque looking resto, we thought we’d give it a try.
So, being a victim of circumstance, I made reservations for my girlfriend and I earlier this month.
Turns out, it was opening night…with plenty of availability.
Here’s a quick post mortem, leaning heavily on the ‘they just opened’ factor:
-
The space was very well put together;
-
Everyone looked happy who was working that night, including those seated sporadically throughout the restaurant;
-
Our server didn’t have a grasp of a number of things – namely, the menu or service (e.g., waited 15 minutes for two Bombay tonics that were sitting on the bar for 10 of those minutes – wanted to see how long it actually took)
-
The food was, as I’ve described it to friends of mine, slightly better than what you may expect from a nice home cooked meal (e.g., mashed potatoes were ice cold – on purpose?, humus was plastered with garlic – in a, I don’t feel so well after eating that/should we have gotten appys at Pinky’s first?, kind of way)
Now don’t get me wrong, Piato seems like a great spot. When it came to service and food on this particular night, though, there were ‘some kinks’.
I’m optimistic that Piato will get on top of these, at least I hope it does.
We won’t be repeating anytime soon.
