semperviva-yoga-vancouver40 days…is not really a long time. Until you try to take a Yoga class on every one of those 40 days.

Some of you might remember that I have a sore hip and recently had to mix up my exercise routine or risk future surgery. Thanks to the local Lululemon/Oqoqo store on West 4th, I was able to try out a yoga class. And at that free class, I was given another free 1-week pass to Semperviva Yoga. (cool)

I spent the next week trying a few different styles of yoga at the Granville Island location. I quickly fell in love with the “practice”, the instructors (especially Cameron, Mara, Rebecca and Clara), and the various locations around Kits and False Creek.

My new-found passion was met with an inner drive to push myself to new stretching limits so I decided to sign up for the 40-day challenge that Semperviva offers a few times a year. With 4 locations and over 160 classes to choose from, Semperviva makes it easy to fit daily yoga practice into anyone’s day. I was off to a great start (15 classes in 18 days) when unfortunately, it became plainly obvious that my left hamstring was not totally healed.

I was in the middle of a deep hammy stretch when Cameron said:

You should be feeling this in the belly of the muscle, not the tendon attachments. Don’t be a hero, listen to your body and back off…

Was he talking directly to me??? Humbled, I hobbled out at the end of class and vowed to truly and finally listen to my body. Maybe the 40-day challenge would have to wait until I was fully healed.

If it wasn’t for my injury, I would definitely still be participating. Semperviva has set up a Facebook page for all those in the challenge to sign up and get encouragement from each others stories. The instructors are motivating and the classes are challenging.

Give a class a try. You won’t be disappointed!
