Things I love include:
- cocktails
- Mark Brand
- Josh Pape
- gyoza
- Gastown
- diamonds
So it’s not surprising that I also love The Diamond, newly opened in Gastown by Mark Brand of Boneta, Josh Pape of Chambar and Sophie Taverner of the Cascade Room.
The room is as delicious as the cocktail list, with wood everything, bright windows looking out over the statue of Gassy Jack and custom diamond wallpaper, but the real gems are behind the bar.
The accomplished barmen are the right mix of friendly, flirty and fun, not to mention a joy to watch in action. Watching Josh put together a flight of mini-Sazeracs was almost as interesting as listening to Geoff, former Cascade Room, tell me all about the history of the place and the people. Geoff has also been very useful as a guide through the cocktail wonderland. I mean, menu.
The sections of ‘Boozy’, ‘Bubbly’, etc. are a helpful starting point, or you can suggest ingredients and go from there. On my first visit I fell in love with Penicillin, a peaty, Talisker whisky concoction that has made it difficult to make my way through the rest of the list - but I’m trying!
The Diamond is upstairs at #6 Powell Street (corner of Powell and Carrall) in Gastown.

what’s the deal? is this the old six acres? i haven’t been to gastown in a while…seems really close to where it used to be.
No, 6 acres is still there. the diamond is around the corner and upstairs, next to Sitar.
By far Gastown and one of Vancouver’s best cocktail bars. A proper cocktail list (try the Penicillin), and friendly attentive service.
Finally got to try it, thanks for the recommendation Degan, was a great evening. Food was so delicious (You have to have the Peking duck sub) and the drinks were, as expected, perfect. Highly recommend checking it out.
