I must admit, I never thought timing and delivery would be associated with chickens.
I thought wrong.
According to The Avian Medical Center in Lake Oswego, Oregon…chickens have a lot to do with timing and delivery…and service!
Apparently, for $75 (US) you can attend chicken training classes on Saturdays that will help you beome a better animal trainer. I’m not joking.
I will quote them because you just can’t make this kind of stuff up:
Chickens?!? YES! CHICKENS!!! They might be chickens, but what you learn at this workshop will help you with animal training whether you work with parrots, dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, ostrich or goldfish.
…
“Once you train a chicken, training dogs and horses is easier! I had no idea it could be so fun, or so useful with other areas of animal training! Wow!”
…
Chickens are ‘literal’ animals. What you train is what you get, and nothing more. This makes chickens an amazing animal for practicing clicker training. With improved observation, timing and delivery skills you’ll become a better trainer overall.
…
Few other animal types will test your timing, delivery and shaping skills like a chicken.
My worlds are colliding and it’s shocking and interesting all at the same time. It’s as though someone stuck release the hounds (my dog trainers/walkers) and Granville Island Veterinary Clinic (my vet) together like a big ball of pet training play-dough and slapped a different area code on it.
Kudos to the team in Lake Oswego…thanks for catching my interest (and putting another spin on timing and delivery)!
darren

It is so cool to see a blurp about chicken training on here Darren! These simple animals can teach us so much about how to teach the most complex behaviors with fluency!
I recently attended a Chicken Workshop and I can tell you that it is honestly the most fun I have ever had with a clicker =) I have now trained many dogs, three cats and a chicken with a clicker and aspire to work with many more species over my career as an animal trainer! I am a better trainer now thanks to my three avian students.
