potholes-vancouver

Well, perhaps the Mayor’s office didn’t waste any time getting a response back (as I told you before), but as of Friday night, with my response back from the City of Vancouver’s Financial Services Group (Risk Management Division), I think MY time has been wasted.

Talk about a lunch bag let down.

In a sparsely worded 3/4 page form letter, I discovered some inconsistencies that will end up coming back to my representative at the City of Vancouver’s Financial Services Group (Risk Management Division) shortly.

Here is an excerpt of the response I received back dated February 11, 2009:

Dear Ms. Patrick

The location of your incident was last inspected on November 7, 2007 and met our Engineering standards at that time. In addition, complaints were received concerning the Howe Street ramp to the Granville Bridge on January 6, 2009. The City attended on January 6, 2009 to carry out any necessary repairs.

The City was unaware that a hazard existed at the time of your unforunate accident and therefore, did not have the opportunity to take remedial steps to prevent this incident.

Reaction:

  • I’m fine with them claiming I’m a woman (I’ll chalk that up to a typo, for now).
  • I’m not fine, however, with their logic:
    • The City’s engineers inspected the area 14 months prior to your incident and it seemed fine [well, let me tell you, time changes things]
    • Complaints were received on the day of my incident 14 months later (January 6,2009) and the City attended on that day to fix them
    • We hit the pothole at approximately 10:30am on the morning of January 6, 2009 and NO work crews were anywhere in site
    • If the City had allegedly repaired the area on the 6th of January based on complaints from the public received on that day, how could they possibly be “unaware that a hazard existed at the time of [my] unforunate accident”?

This logic strikes me as equivalent to hearing a hockey player get interviewed after a game and claim that because his team took the first shot on net, they won the game.

To bring that analogy back to Earth, the City’s timing may have been impeccable; however, their delivery completely missed the net.

And so we start the second period,

darren

Special thanks once again to citycaucus and lailayuile for spreading the word
