I also am a graduate of the ’three strikes, yer out’ school of thought.
Put the two together and you’ll soon realize the reason why I’m uncorking this post for you. The story begins at Whine O’s at 1017 Granville Street in Vancouver.
We didn’t come to eat at Whine O’s on this particular night (check out what modernmix had to say if you want more on that); instead…we came for what they serve in great quantity…wine! Here’s where the swing-and-a-miss story starts.
Let’s lay down some ground work first, though. I won’t disagree with Chantelle as they ‘do’ have fairly strong wine list (not the most elaborate I’ve seen, but hey, I’m only one person). What I will disagree with, though, and feel a surprisingly strong need to mention (warn was too strong a word…thought about it, though), is that when you, the customer, would like to order something, you, the store/restaurant/bar/whatever owner should have it, especially when asked three times!
Aside from being an excruciating loud venue to hold a conversation in (maybe it was just the night we picked, but I doubt it), the server had to come back on two occasions to inform us that what we wanted was not in stock. When I asked the ‘third’ time (hence the baseball analogy), she stumbled (honestly thought they were out of that one as well), and came back with ‘the last bottle’. My third pick was markedly less appealing than my first two. Nonetheless, it was decent…perhaps the conversation made it better…don’t know, hard to measure that part.
Anyway, what you should know: don’t let the massive wall of wine fool you into thinking what you want is ‘in stock’. It may not be. If it isn’t, that really isn’t ideal from a ‘delivery’ standpoint, in my view.
I’d definitely give Whine O’s a shot if you’re looking for something a little different on the crazy club circuit called Granville Street (if that’s what you’re in to…in a Flight of the Conchords tone); however, there may very well be better options out there for your next wine flight out.
The count is 2-1 and if you want my two cents on this place, I won’t be returning to the plate for the next pitch.
