yew restaurant (four seasons vancouver) - round 2

yew_restaurant_four_seasons.jpgHere’s a recipe that is easy to follow:

1) Find YEW restaurant + bar at the Four Seasons Vancouver.

2) Go

3) Repeat

Back in December when the snow was falling (much like today, which kind of sucks), I told you a little bit about my first experience with YEW restaurant + bar.  Two things have happened since then: 1) time has passed; and 2) the smoke has settled from opening night and the industry buzz has subsided (to a degree).  When all is said and done, after three or four visits to YEW restaurant + bar at the Four Seasons Vancouver, I can honestly say that it is one of my top picks for consistently good service when it comes to a place for lunch, dinner, or drinks in downtown Vancouver.

This week I had meetings with a number of people in town from New York.  As it turned out, they happened to be staying at the Four Seasons Vancouver so I thought, why not?  It may not be buddakan New York, but who cares? I wasn’t trying to pick a venue in Vancouver to try and impress anyone, I simply wanted one where I knew I wouldn’t have to worry about bad service, poor atmosphere, or a shoddy menu as soon as I walked in the door.  In essence, I wanted to put that part of the evening on auto pilot and focus on the reason I was there in the first place.  Sound like a plan?  I thought so.

On this particular visit we were sat right next to the impeccably designed glass wine ‘vault’ (see right).  As I said before, the sight lines and the decor at YEW restaurant + bar are really well done.  But that only goes so far, I think.  You need to load the gun before you fire it and believe me, the serving staff certainly are good shots (to beat that analogy to death).

What I found quite cool is that when we sat down and were greeted by our server, he was the same individual that served us back in December.  What’s more…he remembered my name and welcomed me back!  Now that’s great service and immediately disarms you as a guest and has you thinking good thoughts.  Puppy dogs and ice cream type thoughts?  Not quite.  Close.

The rest of the meal (which went on for about 2.5 hours) was well-timed, well-portioned, and most importantly, done with a great deal of care.  Our server knew exactly how often to check back in with us and even went so far as to make some great recommendations when he thought they should be made (based on his read of our table).  Nice touch.

As I did before, I’ll give you two things to take away from this post:

1) Yew Restaurant’s ambience and overall service offering will impress, regardless of your home area code or budget; and

2) As time has passed since it threw open the doors, YEW restaurant + bar seems to be settling in nicely with a healthy lunch and dinner crowd and enough word-of-mouth around the city to keep things interesting for some time to come.

Enjoy.
